Origin tents has built many yurts over the last seven years and experimented with fabrics and fabrication techniques. In general, yurts are ordered by size and fabrics used. Popular sizes have been 5, 6, and 7 metres diameter, so far largest is 9 metres. Materials vary from job to job, each a result from a consultation with the clients. Other choices include colour, window style and placement, and skylight options.

In general canvas is used for the wall sections. Canvas can also be used for the roof cover and top hole cover. Canvas is a very durable outdoor fabric and very pleasing to the eye. The roof option is PVC (Poly Vinyl Canvas) and is also a very durable outdoor fabric which has the benefit of being weldable on the main roof area.

When frames are suplied they are made from sawn Laysen Cypress, an aromatic timber sourced locally. Lattice joints are rivet jointed. Door and doorframes are either solid timber or lighter plywood construction. The central hub is laminated plywood with contour blocks to secure rafters.

Yurts can be supplied at various stages and it is possible to construct your own frame. Many people have done so and plans are supplied with cover orders.
